I read this because I hoped it would help me better understand Walter Benjamin’s “On Some Motifs in Baudelaire.” Little did I expect that Freud would actually help me to better understand the tragic feeling of inadequacy experienced by my and morgan’s neutered chihuahua mutt whenever he comes across a lady friend on the street:
The tie of affection, which binds the child as a rule to the parent of the opposite sex, succumbs to disappoitnmnt, to a vain expectation of satisfaction or to jealousy over the birth of a new baby— unmistakable proof of the the infidelity of the object of the child’s affections. His own attempt to make a baby himself, carried out with tragic seriousness, fails shamefully.
